To start off my first ever post on this blog, I thought it might be a good idea to post a talk I gave back in April at a UXPA event in London. Science Fiction films have been an obsession of mine for as long as I can remember. I was always fascinated by the environments and technology that were created for them. Whilst studying my degree in Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University I found a lot of my inspiration for my designs came from the films I was watching, and looking back at other students work around me, I could see a trend in the designs being created depending on what film was just realised at the time. Let me put it this way, when Iron Man 1 was released there were a lot of Iron Man looking oil canisters and hair dryers! Or when Tron 2010 was realised a lot designs with some fancy lighting imbedded in them (yes I was guilty of it too!) were emerging.
So yes a lot of design 'style' has been influenced by film, not just in students work, but in the real world as well, but what about the actual ideas? The experiences and ideations we see in the technology showcased in films? I am forever keeping an eye out for emerging technology, and asking myself whats next? And how can I incorporate that in the way I am designing experiences for my clients customers?
In my talk I give an introduction into my design thinking, inspiration and methodology for experience design.
